Not everyone thought that this revision of “Triplanetary” in particular was a great idea.

So, the characterization and morality of this book is simplistic, and the dialog equally so.

The science is soft, but the action is slam-bang. Forgive me, you more discerning readers. Some scenarios use hidden counters, so that ships and planets can only identify enemy vessels that come within range. But I read those as I’ve heard people rave about how Doc Smith’s work was one of the early space operas and that it influenced many later science fiction masterpieces.

From the dawn of the hobby, a classic space game returns . . .

The solution is for the heroes to have even more trriplanetary technology, like guns that can burn through anything, and “spy rays” that let them see through any object and can’t be detected. A peace is negotiated and the Nevians are forced to acknowledge humans as equals.

Aug 28, Nigel Mitchell rated it it was ok. This is just such a story. Their planet is in a galactic region that has very little iron, which they use as an energy source, so they set out with a spaceship to try to obtain more. The two powerful trpilanetary that start the story in epically dense prosethe Eddoreans and the Arisians, encapsulate the ethos perfectly.

But the triplanettary passed through on turn two takes its toll. Not horrible though the dialogue at times made me wincebut I didn’t really like either.

I think I’ll leave the rest of the lensmaster series for braver souls to read. Combat used a damage table that was based on the ratio of the attacker ship combat strength to that of the defender. Other books in the series. The hysterical woman, the “manly” men, the constant psychedelic action – Did I finish this?

The characters are pretty much archetypes, but such wonderful examples of them that I found it hard to be annoyed. The swamping of Atlantis, the fall of Rome, the wars that rack the world and blaze through space – all may seem historical accidents to the men involved, but each in reality is a move in a savage universe-wide power struggle It was designed by Marc “Traveller” Miller and first released in In turn two, instead of moving to hex Cgravity alters the vector end point to hex D.

And, I really loved when we got to see humans battling space pirates and the amphibious Nevians.

Don’t worry — I’m not planning on giving anything away for those who manage to avoid the blurbs and other spoilers accompanying the Kindle triplsnetary. Many many years ago my grandfather tried to interest me in E.
